After winning the national championship of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition (Jessup) 2025 this past February, the UPH Law School Jessup Team once again represented Indonesia on the global stage at the International Rounds held in Washington, D.C., United States.
This remarkable journey was achieved by a team composed of Davi Rafa Radhitya Pandi (UPH Law 2021), Jennifer Junardi Chua (UPH Law 2022), Kevin Arton (UPH Law 2023), Pascal Joe Yap (UPH Law 2023), Gabrielle Liman (UPH Law 2024), and Anjarico Marlienardo as Observer (UPH Law 2024).
Jessup is recognized as the largest and oldest international moot court competition in the world, attracting participation from more than 700 universities across over 100 countries. This year's case, “The Naegea Sea,” tackled complex issues of international law, including : (1) the rights and obligations of other members of the international community when two persons claim to be the legitimate president of a state; (2) invocation of immunity for government officials accused of grave violations of human rights; (3) the legal consequences of receding coastlines for the maritime zones of coastal states; and (4) the interpretation of the compromissory clause in a treaty creating a regional organization.
In the International Rounds, the UPH Jessup Team faced strong national champion teams from countries such as Germany, the United Arab Emirates (Dubai), Vietnam, and India. The competition was intense and dynamic, requiring sharp legal analysis and strong advocacy skills before panels of distinguished international judges.
Among more than 700 universities worldwide and over 152 teams competing at the international level, the UPH Jessup Team proudly secured a place among the top 49 teams globally the highest ranking achieved by any Indonesian team this year.
"We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity and proud to carry Indonesia’s name to the world stage. Jessup challenged us in every aspect from in-depth legal research to defending our arguments before international law experts," said Jennifer Junardi Chua, speaking on behalf of the team.
Davi Rafa Radhitya Pandi added, "This competition sharpened not only our critical thinking skills but also our mental and physical resilience. The intense training, deep discussions, and mental preparation truly shaped us to perform at our best in Washington."
This achievement would not have been possible without the guidance and dedication of our coaches and mentors, including : Michelle Limenta, Jessica Los Banos, Bill Sullivan, Arianne Kumara, Louisa Syaura Amalia Mononutu, Andrew Daniel Djapri, Olivia Karlina, Kayla Faza, Christelle Siregar, Cloudio Ardelle Hitipeuw, and Gerald Silalahi, as well as the entire International Law Moot Court Community (ILMCC) UPH, who provided unwavering support throughout our journey.
We also extend our deepest gratitude to our sponsors: NOBU Bank, Nusantara Legal Partnership Law Firm, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners Law Firm, SSEK Law Firm, PT. Mitra Azeta, PT. Trixna Jaya Konstruksi, Artha IT Group, and Roi Tailor, as well as our media partner Hukumonline, for their vital contributions in making our participation at Jessup 2025 possible.
